Caffeine in skin care

Caffeine in skin care

For many, it is probably common to start the day with some form of caffeine in the morning cup. Now it has also become increasingly common to add caffeine to your skin care as well. But what does caffeine in skin care really do?

Caffeine is a so-called vasoconstrictor, which means that it is a substance that narrows blood vessels. Because the effect of having a cup of coffee in the morning seems uplifting, one might conclude that caffeine in skin care should "wake up your skin", but it does not work like that. Caffeine acts as an antioxidant when applied to the skin, which helps protect the skin from free radicals. Because caffeine has a constringent effect on blood vessels, it can reduce swelling around the eyes and also reduce redness where you have superficial vessels. If you have red and swollen skin, caffeine can therefore be an ingredient to look for.

Why can you use caffeine on the skin?

Depending on what you are looking for, caffeine can have many different uses. If you have dark circles under your eyes that are caused by swelling, caffeine can help. Caffeine stimulates blood circulation and can have a minimizing effect on swelling. Caffeine is also said to be able to reduce the visibility of cellulite because caffeine has the ability to narrow blood vessels and stimulate enzymes that break down fat.

When should you take it easy with caffeine on your skin?

When you drink caffeine, it dries out our bodies and thus causes toxic buildup, inflammation, and collagen loss. There is no evidence that caffeine in skin care has any negative effects on the skin. What we always recommend when it comes to new products and ingredients is to start carefully. Start with a few drops and gradually increase the use according to how the skin feels.
