Everything You Need to Know About AHA / BHA / PHA

Products that contain acids are going viral and being talked about a lot right now. It is easy to understand why, when the result gives a smooth and healthy complexion, as well as a lot of glow. Which acid suits you best? In this article, we tell you everything you need to know about AHA, BHA and PHA acids.

AHA, BHA and PHA are different acids that are very effective as skin care ingredients when it comes to exfoliating your skin. They help the skin to get rid of dead skin cells and instead they make the skin smoother and give you a fresh glow. These three acids are also sought after when it comes to moisturizing the skin, but they can also have a positive effect on pigment changes and acne.

What is the difference between these three acids?

AHA acid (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) consists of several different types of acids. They are naturally occurring and are extracted from sugar cane, milk or fruit. The most effective AHA acids are Glycolic acid and Lactic acid. The main properties of these acids are to both penetrate the skin very effectively and to remove dead skin cells, which in turn prevents dry and itchy skin, it can also reduce fine lines, visible pores, acne and wrinkles. They also help to balance the skin and help to keep moisture. This means that AHA acid is suitable for all skin types.

BHA acid (Beta Hydroxy Acid) is another name for Salicylic acid. The main difference between AHA and BHA is that the former is water soluble while BHA is oil soluble. In other words, BHA is very good when it comes to dissolving sebum, dirt and grease in the pores, in addition, BHA has anti-inflammatory properties and therefore works well against acne and problem skin. It is also often used against uneven skin pigmentation caused by the sun. Best suited for oily / oily skin.

PHA (Poly Hydroxy Acid) also called gluconolactone and is the mildest of the acids. This means that it cannot penetrate the skin as quickly as the others, which reduces the risk of skin irritation. PHA is a nice acid that is suitable for you with sensitive skin or if you want to use acid in your daily routine. Just like the other acids, PHA also gives an effective exfoliation, which gives the skin a fresh glow, in addition, PHA is an antioxidant whose properties are to protect the skin against external stresses and damage.

Use sunscreen!

Acids increase the sensitivity of the skin and therefore it is extra important to use sunscreen when you are staying outdoors. Use sunscreen both on the days you have treated the skin with acid, but also afterwards as it takes time for the skin to repair itself.

What effect does AHA/BHA/PHA have on your skin?

  • - Exfoliates the skin
  • - Makes the skin smoother
  • - Makes your skin glow
  • - Reduces skin irritations

Tip! Use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 when using acids.
